6th Congleton Scout Group visits Town Hall
6th Congleton Scout Group enjoyed a visit to the Town Hall recently. They had a talk, a tour and a look at Congleton’s history and Town Treasures.
Greeted by the Town Mayor Cllr Robert Brittain, the group then enjoyed the Town Crier Vicky Pulman ringing her bell and giving the traditional “Oyez! Oyez!” welcome.
The Scouts, Cubs and Beavers heard a talk from Deputy Mayor Cllr Suzy Firkin, including a quiz on the history of Congleton Town, its original Charter and the way people lived when it was signed in 1272. They saw a film that explained more about the Town Hall and Town Treasures.
The talk also covered the role of the Town Council today and the opportunities for the young people and the general public to attend Council meetings and get involved.
The youngsters were invited to consider joining the new Youth Council, with Cllr Kay Wesley, Chair of the Community Committee, explaining that this is to allow young people to help shape Congleton, its activities and its future.
The visitors toured the Town Hall with the Mayor, including the secret tunnel and the Great Hall, where they got an opportunity to hold the Town Mace and ring the Town Crier’s Bell as well as see the original Town Charter from 1272.
Scout Group Leader Phil Newcombe said: “The Beavers, Cubs and Scouts had a brilliant evening, and the visit was pitched perfectly for them. They really enjoyed learning more about the history of Congleton, seeing the Town Mace and Charter, seeing the entrance to the secret tunnel, ringing the Town Crier’s bell, and generally being made to feel so welcome throughout.
Many thanks to the Mayor and everyone else who helped organise and run the evening. It was a fantastic opportunity for the young people to connect with the town’s history and civic life in a really engaging and memorable way.”
The Town Hall team is offering visits to any other youth or adult groups who would like a similar experience. Businesses can book the tour as part of a team ‘away-day’ or as a precursor to a Company Dinner in the Great Hall.
