Help needed to identify locally important landmarks in borough

Residents are being asked to identify the buildings, memorials and landmarks they believe

deserve recognition and protection as part of the borough’s local heritage.

Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough Council is reviewing its register of locally important buildings and landmarks and wants local people to help decide which places should be included.

The register currently contains 149 sites ranging from historic pubs, former civic buildings and war memorials to distinctive signs, sculptures and other familiar features that help tell the story of the borough’s towns and villages.

Among those already recognised are a waymarker in Bignall End, a historic ghost sign in Brunswick Street, Newcastle; a Methodist school in Kidsgrove, a mining sculpture in Silverdale, a pigsty in Wrinehill and war memorials across the borough.

Residents can submit photographs as part of the online nomination process. The deadline for responses is 7 September 2026
