Why/how did you become involved in radio?
My radio career began in 1982 as a volunteer at BBC Radio Derby alongside The Word’s Terry Christian who hosted the award winning youth show ‘Barbed Wireless’. I got my ‘big break’ when Terry was on holiday and I was asked to sit in for him. Although I was terrified at the time, the adrenalin kicked in and I was bitten by the radio bug.
What is your most memorable radio moment so far?
My career spans close to 40 years so there are lots to choose from! My first professional interview was with Hot Chocolate’s Errol Brown, I’ve sat in a swanky hotel with Phil Collins, broadcast from Disneyland Paris and opened the HMV store in The Potteries Centre alongside Take That and our very own Robbie Williams. That said, I just love the daily thrill of being on air and chatting to listeners.
What is the song that ‘lifts your day?’
I am a huge Michael McDonald fan so if I had to pinpoint just one track it would be ‘Sweet Freedom’.
How are you feeling about joining the Blue Sky Team?
I am excited and terrified in equal measures, but most of all proud to have the opportunity to kick a ball in my own back yard and present the mid morning show across North Staffordshire and South Cheshire.
What is it you like about our local area (North Staffs and South Cheshire)?
I’ve broadcast up and down the country but I am a local lad at heart. My mum is from Tunstall any my father grew up in Mow Cop. I returned to the Uttoxeter area a few years ago and it’s great to be home!
Fun fact!
I started out as an apprentice electrician for JCB in Rocester, but don’t ask me to rewire a plug for you – the only sparks flying these days are the ones in my radio career!
